The 1800s Way of Dieting
Weird Diet of the Week - How people lost weight before the corporations took over
Have you ever heard of the Banting diet? It is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating style that has been around since the 19th century. It was named after William Banting, an English undertaker who suffered from obesity and tried various methods to lose weight without success. He finally found a solution in dietary advice given by a physician named William Harvey, who suggested him to avoid sugar, starch, beer, milk, and butter, and eat more meat, greens, fruits, and dry wine. Banting followed this plan and lost 46 pounds in a year, and wrote a booklet called Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public, to share his experience and results with others. The Banting diet is considered to be one of the first low-carb diets in history, and it has influenced many modern diets, such as the Atkins, the ketogenic, and the paleo diets. This process, called ketosis, can help you lose weight, stabilize your blood sugar levels, and improve your overall well-being.
The Banting diet consists of four meals a day, and it divides foods into three categories: green, orange, and red. Green foods are those that you can eat as much as you like, such as animal proteins, non-starchy vegetables, fermented foods, and healthy oils. Orange foods are those that you can eat in moderation, such as dairy products, nuts, seeds, and some fruits.
Red foods are those that you should avoid completely, such as sugar, grains, legumes, processed foods, and alcohol. The Banting diet may sound strange to some people, especially those who are used to eating a lot of carbs and fear fat. However, many people have reported positive results from following this diet, such as weight loss, improved energy, reduced appetite, and better health markers.
